The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), has accused godfathers with the current naira notes in warehouses of attempting to delay the new naira from being circulated.
This accusation follows a bill presented by the House of Representatives, requesting an extension of the three-month notice required by the CBN to withdraw or redesign any currency, to six months.

If approved, this bill would suit the given January 31, 2023 deadline of April 2023.
The CUPP says these godfathers are the ones backing the Speaker and other house members who are supporting the bill.
Spokesperson of the CUPP, Ikenga Ugochinyere, urged Nigerians not to fall for plans to stall the redesign of the naira currency, for the personal gain of certain persons.
He said, “The CUPP notes that the primary aim of the proposed bill at the House of Representatives is to scuttle the CBN policy and stall the redesign of the naira currency.
“The CUPP states that all the godfathers with old naira warehouses are solid behind the Speaker and House of Representatives on this.

“The redesigning of the naira currency policy is a welcome one and has come to stay for the clean-up and development of our electoral processes. The unpatriotic move will fail woefully.
“The godfathers behind this bill have made handsome provisions for procuring the support of the majority of the members of the National Assembly.”
