In Kogi State, the threat of examination malpractice has become more than a whisper; it is a challenge that can no longer be ignored.

Education authorities now face a pressing dilemma on how to restore honesty and ensure that students earn their success through hard work, not deception.

Kogi Probes WASSCE Malpractice

With stakes this high, urgent action is necessary to protect the promise of a fair education system for all.

On Tuesday, the Kogi State Ministry of Education took a decisive step by inaugurating an Examination Misconduct, Investigation, and Disciplinary Committee to probe schools and individuals involved in malpractice during the 2024 West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The committee, led by Dr Jibrin Saidu Alhaji, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, aims to uncover the depth of the malpractice and recommend punishments in line with the Kogi State Education Law 2020.

Also, the committee has just one week to complete its investigation and present its findings.

Representatives Involved

Other members of the committee include representatives from the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Education, Kogi State Secondary Education Commission, and the West African Examination Council (WAEC).

Mrs Omolayo Barikisu Onozare, Director of Administration, will serve as the Secretary.

While inaugurating the committee, the State Commissioner for Education, Wemi Jones, urged members to carry out their duties with fairness and integrity.

Warning Against WASSCE Malpractice

He warned: “Examination malpractice is a cankerworm that must be nipped in the bud, as it directly affects the future of our children”.

This urgent response follows WAEC’s recent decision to de-recognise schools and blacklist supervisors caught aiding malpractice during the 2024 WASSCE.

Now, all eyes are on the committee to see if it can restore faith in the state’s education system.
