Janet Jackson has issued an apology following backlash over comments she made that US Vice President Kamala Harris is not black as her father is a white man.
Janet Jackson’s remarks had sparked controversy for fuelling right-wing conspiracy theory pushed by Republican candidate for President Donald Trump and his campaign questioning Vice President Harris’ racial identity as a black woman.
After being corrected by a reporter, Jackson suggested that she was misinformed
The five-time Grammy Award winner’s manager, Mo Elmasri, suggested that she had spoken “based on misinformation”
In a press statement, Elmasri said, “Janet deeply respects Vice President Kamala Harris and her achievements as a Black and Indian woman.
She apologises for any confusion caused and recognises the importance of accurate representation in public discourse.”
Vice President Kamala Harris is of mixed black (Jamaican) and Indian heritage.
