Former Chinese communist leader, Jiang Zemin, has died at the age of 96, on Wednesday.
The former president died of leukemia and associated multiple organ failure in Shanghai, on Wednesday as announced by the state-run Xinhua news agency.
His death is coming amidst the current crisis in China over the zero-Covid policy implemented by the government, which the citizens are protesting against.

Many citizens are mourning the death of their former leader as they claim his era was one in which China was freer and more open to the world.
The obituary from the party hailed the deceased as an outstanding leader and a communist fighter that withstood many trials and tests.
The obituary read, “During the serious political turmoil in China in the spring and summer of 1988, Comrade Jiang Zemin supported and implemented the correct decision of the Party Central Committee to oppose unrest, defend the socialist state power, safeguard the fundamental interests of the people and effectively maintain the stability of Shanghai.”
During his tenure, as China’s leader, the country achieved many things including regaining sovereignty over Hong Kong and winning the bid to host the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
