Former President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Issa Hayatou has died at the age of 77.
According to Cameroon Concord, Hayatou passed away on Thursday in Paris.
Hayatou served as CAF President from 1988 until March 2017, when he was succeeded by Ahmad Ahmad of Madagascar.
He also held the position of interim FIFA President from October 2015 to February 2016, following Sepp Blatter’s suspension.
During his tenure, he oversaw the FIFA elections that led to the election of current FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
A CAF spokesperson stated: “We have lost a remarkable leader, a man who devoted his life to the advancement of football in Africa.”
The spokesperson added that Hayatou’s legacy would continue to inspire efforts to further develop the sport on the continent.
