World record holder Tobi Amusan of Nigeria failed to qualify for the 100m Hurdles final at the Paris Olympics after finishing third in her semi-final heat.
Amusan posted a time of 12.55 seconds, leaving her to wait for the outcomes of the remaining two semi-finals to see if she could advance.
Her hopes were dashed when Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent finished third in the third semi-final with a time of 12.44 seconds, and France’s Cyrena Samba-Mayela came fourth at 12.52 seconds both faster times than Amusan’s.
This result eliminates Amusan’s chances of a podium finish in what was her third Olympic appearance.
Tobi Amusan gained international recognition in 2022 when she set a world record in the 100m hurdles at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, clocking in at 12.12 seconds and breaking the previous record of 12.20 seconds set by American Kendra Harrison in 2016.
She became Nigeria’s first-ever world record holder in an athletics event.
With Amusan’s elimination, Nigeria faces the prospect of leaving the Paris Olympics without a medal as the games conclude on Sunday, August 11, 2024.
