The unions argue that the new format, which will feature 32 teams and take place in June and July 2025, is an unacceptable additional burden on players.

The players’ unions believe that FIFA’s decisions violate their rights under the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and EU competition law.

They have asked the Brussels Commercial Court to refer the case to the Court of Justice of the European Union, citing potential violations of EU law.

FIFPRO, the global professional footballers union, supports the plaintiffs in their legal challenge.

In a statement, FIFPRO said that the expanded Club World Cup is an example of FIFA’s “continued disregard” for the well-being of players.

The players’ unions have long argued that the current football calendar is overloaded and unworkable.

They point to the increased number of games and competitions, including the expanded Club World Cup, as evidence that FIFA is prioritizing commercial interests over player welfare.
