FIFA has lifted its ban on Kenya’s national football federation, following the government’s decision to re-establish the body after it was disbanded due to corruption allegations, according to the country’s sports minister.

FIFA notified the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) on Monday that the decision was made in response to the reinstatement of the Football Kenya Federation’s (FKF) executive committee by Kenya’s new sports minister.

The ban went into effect on February 24, after the sports ministry disbanded the FKF and appointed a caretaker committee in the wake of alleged misappropriation of funds.

Kenya’s new Sports Minister, Ababu Namwamba, told reporters in Nairobi on Monday that he had met with FIFA officials in Qatar to discuss the country’s suspension.

“I would like to express my delight for Kenya to return back to international football,” he said, announcing the lifting of the ban.

“I am happy that FIFA has made it clear that certain issues of integrity, accountability and good governance in football will be sorted out and investigations into judicial matters remain alive,” he added.

Following the ban which lasted for nine months, no Kenyan club has been allowed to compete internationally.

Kenya has so far missed three continental events including the men’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, CAF Confederation, and Champions League games.
