Cane weaving is a craft as old as man. Even in the modern day, it has been re-invented to suit domestic and office use.
Somewhere in the heart of Lagos, Nigeria, cane weavers gather to perform their beautiful magic.
As it is our culture at IbrandTv to tell captivating business stories, we took a trip to the popular “Mende Cane Village”.
Mende Cane Village is located under the Ojota Link-Bridge in Maryland, Lagos.
In this place, skilled artisans have mastered the art of changing simple cane into fine furniture and household items.
Cane Weaving In Its Beauty
The sight of beautifully crafted cane-weaved items like chairs, tables, baskets, flower vases, and many more on display truly showed that even the bush holds so much potential and beauty.
It is safe to say that tradition meets innovation in Mende Cane Village.
IbrandTv correspondents wasted no time in starting up a discussion with the chairman of the Cane Weavers Association, Mr. Dennis.
From his appearance, it was obvious that his years of experience in the cane-weaving business could not be traded for anything.
Mr. Dennis revealed that he started the business as a young apprentice after he was brought to Lagos by a relative.
Also, he said he was able to start up his business after saving up money.
Furthermore, he added that the cane-weavers can only begin selling after they have joined the cane-weavers association.
Mr. Dennis made mention of the transition from the traditional way of cane-weaving to the modern one.
The Transition
“The white men came here and gave us a catalogue; they come from Indonesia.
“We have different kinds of cane we use to design now, unlike before when we could only do baskets with our cane.
“But now, we can do any kind of design with our cane, including party souvenirs and event materials.”
Also, IbrandTv had an interview with other artisans including Mrs. Charity, who has been in the cane-weaving business with her husband since 1987, before he passed on.
However, after his demise, she continued in the business, and she has not only been the breadwinner of her family but has also been able to sponsor four children through the university.
