The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has followed the provision of the 2022 Electoral act.
INEC announces the suspension of the Enugu East senatorial election over the death of the Labour Party candidate, Oyibo Chukwu.
The chairman of the electoral body, Mahmood Yakubu, announced the postponement on Friday during a media briefing at the national collation centre in Abuja.
The LP candidate was killed while returning from a campaign trip on Wednesday.
The chairperson had earlier said the commission would only postpone the election in line with the provisions of section 34 of the 2022 Electoral Act.

“In such a situation, the commission will have to countermined the senatorial district for two weeks.
“The section can only be activated if the party involved officially notifies the commission,” Yakubu said.
Section 34(b) of the act stipulates that “in the case of election into a legislative House, the election shall start afresh and the political party whose candidate died may, if it intends to continue to participate in the election, conduct a fresh primary within 14 days of the death of its candidate and submit the name of a new candidate to the Commission to replace the dead candidate”.
In this light, the senatorial election for Enugu East earlier scheduled for February 25, will no longer hold and will follow a new calendar from INEC.
