The Minister of Education has reacted to ongoing protests by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), saying the government has paid them what they worked for.
The association embarked on a nationwide protest on Monday, to demand payment of full salaries for October after the Federal Government refused to pay for the eight-month strike period.
Addressing the State House correspondents in Abuja on Wednesday, the Minister said the lecturers would not be paid for work not done.
Adamu said, “The strike has been called off and the government has paid them what is due to them. I think that’s the position of the government; that it is not going to pay anyone for work not done and they only did, I think, the number of days that they were paid.”
Adamu refuted allegations from the President of ASUU, Professor Emmanuel Osodoke, who claimed the government was treating them as casual workers being paid on a pro-rata basis.
The Minister also denies being aware of any problem and claims he is not aware of the work-free-day, the association has planned.
“So let’s wait till the work-free-day comes, then I’ll find out the details and we’ll discuss, you can ask me them, but at the moment, I’m telling you honestly, I do not know that there is a problem,” he said.
