It’s not every day you see the streets of Lagos lined with steaming bowls of jollof rice being handed out like souvenirs.

But that’s exactly what happened after celebrity chef Hilda Baci’s Guinness World Record attempt to cook the largest pot of jollof rice wrapped up.

The Real Reasons Buckets Of Jollof Rice Remained After Hilda Baci’s Record Bid

The Gino team, who supported Hilda and her crew, were spotted distributing the leftover rice in communities across Lagos.

Despite reducing the target from 250 bags of rice to 200, the sheer quantity still left plenty behind, even after the marathon cooking officially ended at 2:45am.

Many spectators, once excited to collect rice in coolers, had already gone home by then.

So why did the pots still brim with rice long after the event?

Here are three reasons.

1. Timing and Delays Due to Rain

Hilda and her team started later than planned because of heavy rainfall, which disrupted both set-up and cooking.

Also, the delay stretched the process into the early hours.

This means by the time the food was ready, many fans who had waited earlier were already exhausted and had left the venue.

Even with the die-hard supporters who remained, there simply weren’t enough people to finish the massive servings.

2. The Cooking Marathon Lasted Over Nine Hours

Preparing a dish on this scale isn’t like cooking Sunday lunch.

With over 200 bags of rice, a pre-heated base, and layer upon layer of ingredients, the cooking stretched well beyond nine hours.

By the time the last batches were served, the initial frenzy had cooled.

Many of those who brought coolers had collected their share earlier, but there was still far too much rice left for the dwindling crowd.

3. Quantity Outpaced Demand

Even after cutting the target from 250 bags to 200, the amount of rice cooked was staggering.

While thousands registered to attend, not everyone stayed through the rain, traffic jams, and long wait.

Some came just for the spectacle and left before the rice was served.

With fewer hands to eat, distribute, or carry it home, mountains of jollof were left untouched.

Hilda Baci’s jollof rice record attempt wasn’t just about cooking, it was about making history, inspiring pride, and bringing people together.

Even though mountains of rice were left behind, the effort turned into a blessing as the food reached communities far beyond the event venue.
