Anambra Police Arrest Officer Behind Viral “I’ll Shoot Anyone Recording Me” Video

A smartphone camera.

A police uniform.

A chilling threat.

That was all it took to ignite another explosive debate about police accountability, abuse of power and public trust in Nigeria’s security system.

Anambra Police Arrest Officer Behind Viral “I’ll Shoot Anyone Recording Me” Video

What began as a viral social media video has now ended in arrest, disciplinary action and nationwide outrage after the Anambra State Police Command confirmed the detention of a police officer who threatened to kill anyone caught filming him while on duty.

The incident has once again exposed the fragile relationship between Nigerian citizens and the police force — a relationship many believe is hanging dangerously between fear and distrust.

The Video That Shocked Nigerians

The officer at the centre of the controversy, identified as Assistant Superintendent of Police Newton Isokpehi, became an internet sensation for all the wrong reasons after a disturbing video surfaced online.

In the clip, the officer — speaking in Pidgin English — issued terrifying threats against anyone who attempted to record him while carrying out official duties.

His words were blunt.

Aggressive.

And deeply alarming.

At one point, he reportedly threatened to “clear everybody down,” including innocent bystanders, if anyone pointed a camera at him while he was armed.

Even more controversially, he allegedly declared that any superior officer who approved the filming of police personnel would be forced to bury the citizens he threatened to kill.

Within hours, the video exploded across social media platforms, especially X and Instagram.

Public outrage followed almost immediately.

From Viral Threats To Public Apology

As criticism intensified, the officer later deleted the controversial video from his TikTok account.

Soon after, another video emerged.

This time, the same officer appeared apologetic.

He claimed his comments were made out of frustration.

But for many Nigerians, the apology came too late.

The damage had already been done.

Because beyond the words themselves, the incident touched a nerve in a country where many citizens already feel unsafe during encounters with security operatives.

To critics, the video did not sound like a joke or emotional outburst.

It sounded like a dangerous reflection of unchecked power.

Police Move Quickly To Contain Public Backlash

Facing mounting outrage, the Anambra State Police Command moved swiftly.

In an official statement issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police Ngozi Ezeabata on behalf of Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu, the Command confirmed that the officer had been arrested.

According to the police, authorities immediately reviewed the viral video, identified the officer and launched internal disciplinary proceedings against him.

The Command stressed that the behaviour displayed in the video violated the ethical standards and professional code of the Nigeria Police Force.

Drug Test Ordered As Investigation Deepens

In a surprising twist, the Police Command also revealed that the officer had undergone a drug test as part of the ongoing investigation.

The decision has sparked even more public conversation online.

Many Nigerians are now asking uncomfortable questions:

Was the officer mentally unstable?

Emotionally overwhelmed?

Or simply expressing what some citizens secretly fear about policing culture in Nigeria?

The police say the drug test forms part of efforts to ensure a transparent and comprehensive investigation into all surrounding circumstances.

Police Say Misconduct Will Not Be Tolerated

Commissioner Orutugu strongly condemned the officer’s conduct, insisting that the Nigeria Police Force remains a disciplined institution.

According to the Command, acts of misconduct, abuse of office, incitement and unprofessional behaviour capable of damaging public trust would not be tolerated.

The police also promised that the outcome of the disciplinary process would be made public.

For many Nigerians, however, skepticism remains.

Over the years, citizens have watched countless viral police controversies generate outrage online before quietly disappearing without visible consequences.

That growing distrust explains why this latest incident has attracted such intense national attention.

Why Nigerians Are Increasingly Recording Police Officers

The controversy comes at a time when more Nigerians are using smartphones to document encounters with law enforcement officers.

Many citizens now see video recordings as protection against intimidation, extortion or abuse.

Earlier this year, a Federal High Court reportedly affirmed the constitutional right of Nigerians to film police officers carrying out public duties in public spaces.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police also publicly stated that officers should not fear being recorded if they are acting professionally.

Yet despite those legal and public assurances, tension between police officers and civilians carrying cameras continues to grow.

And incidents like this only deepen public suspicion.

The Bigger Problem Nobody Wants To Admit

The viral video may involve one officer.

But the national reaction reveals something much larger.

A trust crisis.

Because in societies where citizens fully trust law enforcement, people rarely feel the need to record every interaction with police officers.

But in Nigeria, many citizens instinctively reach for their phones the moment uniforms and rifles appear.

That behaviour alone says a lot.

The real issue is no longer just about one threatening video.

It is about a country still struggling to answer a painful question:

Why do so many Nigerians feel safer with a camera than with the police meant to protect them?
