Kano: Oba of Benin addresses Ganduje on plans for new emirates

The Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare, II, has urged Kano Governor Umar Ganduje, to reconsider the creation of additional Emirate Councils in the State.

The Oba spoke during a courtesy call to the Governor, in Kano on Monday, against the backdrop of beliefs in many quarters that the creation of new emirates targets Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi.

The monarch said the splitting of the Emirates should be treated with utmost care, maturity and wisdom that their forefathers applied in handling matters of that nature.

“I have been approached by some traditional rulers, especially in the Southern part of the country, to advise on the most viable platform for wider participation and inclusiveness of traditional rulers, in order to effectively support the governing authority at various levels to providing good participatory and inclusive governance of our people”, The Nation quoted him as saying.

”However, the dynamics of our national development, especially since the turn of the century, implies that the governance structure and its mechanisms of operation require fundamental re-engineering to ensure that it becomes more participatory, as well as more inclusive for it to achieve the laudable objectives inspiring its existence.”

Earlier, Sanusi congratulated Ganduje for his victory at the Supreme court, promising that he will continue to support the unity and economic development of the State.

He called on the people of the state to continue to support Ganduje toward piloting the State to another level of economic prosperity and growth.

Responding, Ganduje, promised that he would continue to collaborate with traditional rulers, pointing out that traditional rulers are the bridge between the people and the government.

The governor stated that the Oba of Benin’s visit to Kano, is an indication that traditional rulers in the country are on the way to integration.
