A member of Anthony Joshua’s family has claimed the former two-time heavyweight champion is set to retire from professional boxing following a tragic road accident in Nigeria.
Joshua was involved in a fatal crash last Monday on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Makun after his vehicle collided with a stationary truck.
While the 36-year-old escaped with minor injuries, two members of his close circle Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele lost their lives at the scene.
Their funerals were held at a London mosque on Sunday, January 4, 2026, with Joshua in attendance to pay his final respects.
The incident came just 10 days after Joshua returned to the ring, knocking out Jake Paul in Miami on December 19, 2025.
Since the accident, neither Joshua nor his promoter, Eddie Hearn, has spoken publicly about his future, with Matchroom Boxing offering no further comment beyond an initial statement released on the night of the crash.
However, Joshua’s uncle, Adedamola Joshua, has now suggested that the boxer has decided to step away from the sport.
Speaking to The Punch, Adedamola said the family is relieved by the decision, citing the emotional toll of watching Joshua fight.
He added that the boxer has communicated his intention to retire directly to the family.
Before the accident, Joshua had been linked with a potential blockbuster all-British showdown against Tyson Fury, reportedly pencilled in for 2026.
Across his career, the British heavyweight has recorded 28 wins from 33 fights, with four defeats.
Joshua himself has yet to confirm or deny the retirement claims.
