The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has reported that nearly 2.3 million children in Nigeria have not received routine immunisation (zero dose), putting them at significant risk of a polio outbreak.
This alarming statistic highlights the urgent need for increased awareness and action to protect our children from this preventable disease.
The UNICEF’s Chief of Bauchi Field Office, Dr. Nuzhat Rafique, disclosed this information during an awareness road walk in Bauchi to commemorate this year’s World Polio Day.
As communities come together to raise awareness about the importance of vaccination, it’s essential for parents and guardians to take proactive steps in ensuring their children receive the necessary immunisations.
Here are five ways to help prevent polio in children:
1. Get Vaccinated On Time
Ensure your child receives all recommended polio vaccines as scheduled. Vaccination is the best way to protect against polio.
2. Stay Informed About Vaccination Drives
Keep an eye out for local vaccination campaigns. Many communities hold special vaccination days where children can receive their polio vaccines for free.
3. Educate Yourself and Others
Learn about polio and its symptoms. Share this information with family and friends to help spread awareness about the importance of vaccination.
4. Encourage Routine Health Check-ups
Regular check-ups with a healthcare provider can ensure that your child is up-to-date on vaccinations, including polio.
5. Report and Seek Help for Unvaccinated Children
If you know of children in your community who have not been vaccinated, encourage their parents to get them vaccinated. You can also report unvaccinated children to local health authorities for assistance.
