There is a storm coming, no, not that kind of storm.
A great political battle lies ahead, one that can either make or mar Nigeria.
This battle, though still far from reality has sparked a wide range of curiosity and anxiety among people.
That battle is the 2027 Election.
Indeed, this election is still very far, but trust us the battle has since begun.
While many presidential ambitions remain hidden or perhaps, unknown, many others have already started preparations for a takeover.
As the suspense builds up leaving talks of the 2027 election in the lips of virtually every Nigerian, politicians and political parties have already started plotting their strategies.
Already, the battlefield is set.
On one hand, is Goodluck Jonathan, Nigeria’s former president who the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) thinks is a messiah.
On the other hand, is Bola Tinubu, the Jagaban himself who is already seated on the throne of power.
Let us not forget Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) candidate in 2023.
Obi has not backed down his ambition for the race not even for a second.
In fact, every day, the hardship in Nigeria gives him the zeal of intervention.
His “A new Nigeria is POssible” mantra has never left his mouth.
What about Rabiu Kwankwaso of the NNPP?
His dream of becoming President beams fresh every day.
You see? The battle awaits.
The Return Of Jonathan
While Jonathan has yet to express interest in the presidential race, the PDP and many other Nigerians see him as the right man for the job.
In Kano, his presidential posters had flooded the streets as Nigerians drummed support for Jonathan sparking rumours of his possible return to the political arena.
It was not long after this incident that the PDP called on Jonathan to contest for the office of the president in 2027 via its platform.
The PDP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, said the party had eagerly awaited Jonathan’s return for a second term due to his political rise.
Abdullahi urged Jonathan to heed the call to finish what he started within the party, emphasising that it would be regrettable if the former president chose another party for his presidential bid.
His words: “We’ve said this about Jonathan and our governors.
Even the FCT minister, is arguably the best performer in his role and he is a product of PDP. El-Rufai, Okonjo-Iweala, Dora Akunyili, Obi Ezekwesili, Akinwunmi Adesina, Amina Mohammed… these are the pride of this country, and they are all products of the PDP.
“If Goodluck Jonathan is seriously considering running, we have been calling him to come back and complete his term.
It will not be out of place, but if he runs with another political party, it will expose the hypocrisy within the APC,” he stressed.
Don’t Miss: 2027 Election: PDP Offers Goodluck Jonathan Presidential Ticket On A Platter
It did not take long for the All Progressives Congress (APC) to reply to PDP’s invitation to Jonathan.
The APC’s National Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, said the former president would face another defeat if he responded to the call.
According to him, the APC will not be jittery about the ex-president’s enrolment in the 2027 race, stressing that 10 of Goodluck Jonathans will not defeat President Bola Tinubu.
The Walkover
He said in part: “There is just no way the APC will be jittery, if at all, there is such a plan to enrol former President Goodluck Jonathan into the race.
The APC defeated him when he was in power. Defeating him when he’s out of power will be a walkover.”
Are things not getting interesting already?
Feel the tension, the dexterity.
Indeed, the 2027 election promises to be one of a kind.
But then, one can not help but wonder, what is giving the APC such confidence, such drive.
Well, in due time, we will all find out.
