Lent and Ramadan 2026: Tinubu Appeals for National Unity and Stability

In a message released through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President encouraged citizens to reflect deeply on the spiritual significance of both observances and to channel their devotion toward the country’s progress and security.

Tinubu noted the rare coincidence of Lent and Ramadan commencing on the same day this year, describing it as a powerful reminder of the shared values that bind Nigerians together as one people under God.

He urged adherents of both religions to embody the principles of compassion, sacrifice, and righteousness that define their faiths.

A Solemn Period

Highlighting the meaning of the Christian Lenten season, the President explained that it is a solemn period marked by fasting, self-denial, and repentance, modeled after Jesus Christ’s time of fasting in the wilderness before His crucifixion — an act central to Christian salvation.

He also reflected on the spiritual depth of Ramadan, describing it as a sacred month of total submission to God, characterized by fasting, prayer, charity, and communal solidarity.

Beyond abstaining from food and drink, he said, Ramadan calls Muslims to sincere devotion, obedience, and acts of generosity, in keeping with one of Islam’s five pillars.

The President concluded with a prayer that the spiritual lessons and blessings of Lent and Ramadan would inspire lasting harmony and goodwill across the country.
