Nigeria has stepped up its campaign to secure a Category C seat on the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council.
It promoted its four-year zero-piracy record and major blue-economy reforms as key strengths ahead of the election next week.

Speaking to over 150 delegations at a high-level diplomatic lunch in London, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr Adegboyega Oyetola, presented Nigeria’s maritime progress as a compelling reason for its election.
Oyetola noted that Nigeria’s bid is backed by clear achievements in maritime safety, environmental responsibility, and economic reforms.
Also, he highlighted the transformation of the Gulf of Guinea, which has shifted from being a global piracy hotspot to one of the safest regions for shipping.

“Nigeria is not just seeking a seat; we are a nation whose concrete actions have strengthened global seaborne trade,” Oyetola said, insisting that the country’s candidature is built on “tangible achievements, not promises.”
