Travellers passing through Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport may soon find a transformed experience waiting for them.

Backed by a ₦712 billion budget and fresh approval from the Federal Executive Council, FAAN is set to overhaul the ageing infrastructure.

Travellers passing through Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport may soon find a transformed experience waiting for them.

But this isn’t just about concrete and cables.

FAAN’s Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, detailed the ambitious plans, beginning with Terminal 1—the busiest terminal in the country.

“We will completely overhaul T1,” she stated.

“We’re upgrading the façade, modernising the interior finishes, and replacing outdated plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems.

Our goal is to bring every aspect up to international standards.”

Next, Kuku highlighted the expansion of Terminal 2.

She explained that FAAN will extend both the boarding bridge area and the apron to accommodate more wide-body aircraft.

To facilitate this, the authority will relocate existing hangars currently occupying the planned expansion zone.

“This step is crucial for ensuring smooth project execution,” she added.

Smarter Access And Connectivity

Moreover, FAAN plans to improve access roads around the airport.

“We will develop a modern, efficient road network,” Kuku said.

“This will ease traffic congestion and enhance the overall travel experience for passengers arriving and departing from MMIA.”

In addition, FAAN will construct a Skywalk to connect the multi-storey car park directly to Terminal 2.

Simultaneously, the agency will build a new structure to link Terminals 1 and 2.

“By integrating these terminals, we will create a unified complex that improves passenger movement and streamlines airport operations,” she explained.

Enhanced Passenger Experience

During the renovation period, FAAN will set up a temporary departure hall.

“We will make sure it’s well-organised, clean, and comfortable,” Kuku promised.

“Passengers won’t just be accommodated—they will be looked after.”

FAAN also intends to revitalise the airport’s surroundings.

“We will redesign the central square in front of the terminal buildings,” she noted.

“This space will welcome arriving passengers with a refreshed atmosphere that reflects national pride and hospitality.”

Finally, Kuku emphasised that this project goes beyond mere infrastructure.

“We are reimagining the future of MMIA—not just rebuilding a terminal, but enhancing the entire aviation experience for Nigerians.

The new Terminal 1 will feature faster check-ins, smarter security systems, brighter lounges, and better retail options.

Everything is being designed with the traveller in mind.”

With these sweeping changes, FAAN aims not only to upgrade infrastructure but also to make a lasting promise: to deliver a world-class airport that reflects the energy, ambition, and spirit of Nigeria.
