In a dramatic turn of events, the Bayelsa State High Court has given the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, a 42-day ultimatum to settle a whopping ₦649 million hotel debt.
The debt was incurred by the Police SWAT team, led by CSP Silas Adebayo, during a sting operation in the Opu Nembe community ahead of the last Governorship elections.
The court’s decision comes after the owner of the Euphemie Motel, Darius Obiene, filed a suit against the Police IG, the Nigerian Police, and the Police Service Commission.
The story began in August 2023 when the Police SWAT team, led by CSP Silas Adebayo, allegedly invaded the Opu Nembe community and occupied the Euphemie Motel without permission from its owners.
The team was reportedly deployed for a sting operation ahead of the last Governorship elections in the area, and they turned the motel into their operational base.
Chief Obiene’s lawsuit claims that the Police SWAT team’s forceful entry and occupation of the motel were illegal.
He is seeking a declaration that the defendants are liable for the sum of ₦25,000 per night per room for the period between August 12, 2023, and October 3, 2024.
Additionally, he is seeking damages of ₦200 million for the loss of revenue and damage to his property.
The court’s warning to the respondents is clear: failure to appear in court may result in judgment being entered in their absence.
