Valentine’s Day : More Listeners Turn To Heartbreak Songs On Spotify

Spotify on Thursday unveiled a striking increase in the streaming of heartbreak songs across Nigeria during the Valentine’s season.

This is with a staggering 626 per cent rise between 2022 and 2024.

This revelation was made in a statement from Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, issued in Lagos, Nigeria.

Okumu remarked, “Spotify data highlights an unexpected trend—an enormous surge in heartbreak song streams.

Nigerians are turning to music as an emotional outlet.

This is with an astonishing 626 per cent growth in heartbreak streams recorded between 2022 and 2024.

This Valentine’s season, the melodies of love are accompanied by the echoes of heartbreak, and the data reveals that these emotions are more pronounced than ever.”

She further noted a particularly surprising trend on Valentine’s Day, male listeners streamed heartbreak songs at a significantly higher rate than their female counterparts.

This could indicate that men relate more deeply to heartbreak and use music as a private means of processing their emotions.

“Whatever the reason, one thing remains certain—when love fills the air, so does heartbreak, and Nigerian men are pressing play on their pain more than anticipated.

“While Valentine’s Day is often associated with grand romantic gestures, heartbreak remains a prevalent theme, one that is often concealed from public view,” she added.
