Edinson Cavani, Uruguay’s star striker, has announced his retirement from international football at 37.
Known as “El Matador”, Cavani is Uruguay’s second-highest scorer and third-most capped player, with 58 goals in 136 games.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Cavani said: “I’ve decided to step aside, but I’ll always support you with all my heart. I want to focus on this new stage of my career and give my all wherever I go.”
Cavani made his debut for Uruguay in 2008 and played in four World Cups, reaching the semi-finals in 2010.
He’s played for several clubs, including Boca Juniors, Palermo, Napoli, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United, and Valencia.
Uruguay will miss Cavani in the upcoming 2024 Copa America, where they’ll face the US, Bolivia, and Panama in the group stage.
