University Staff Unions Stage Protest Over Withheld Salaries

When university staff go on strike in protest of harsh realities in the education sector, the government often insists on a no-work-no-pay reward for that decision.

Once again, the fragile peace in Nigeria’s public universities may once again crumble, as the SSANU and NASU stage protest on their campuses.

In a trending video, on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, the aggrieved university workers were seen in large numbers protesting inside the campuses.

They held placards with different inscriptions, demanding the immediate release of their withheld salaries.

This decision came after the federal government’s unsuccessful attempt to address the unions’ grievances regarding four months of withheld salaries.

The unions had expressed frustration over what they perceived as the government’s disregard for their financial and welfare concerns.

Also, they had expressed disappointment in the government’s lack of commitment and have planned a series of industrial actions.

These included a general meeting of their branches to raise awareness among members about the government’s insensitivity, a one-day nationwide protest on Tuesday, and a national protest in Abuja on July 18, 2024.
