It is increasingly clear that celebrities face considerable risks when making public comments about the economic state of their countries, particularly if those remarks are critical of the government.

“They Want To Cancel My Show Over My Remarks On The Economy” -Davido

Nigerian Afrobeats superstar, Davido, is in the eye of the needle and things are not looking good.

Every day, threats and more threats come in as a result of his recent critique of Nigeria’s economy during an appearance on the American podcast Big Homies House.

During the podcast, Davido warned American citizens against considering relocation to Africa, specifically Nigeria, due to the nation’s worsening economic conditions.

Also, he described it as being in “shambles”.

However, his comments provoked widespread backlash,

Several prominent figures, including Joe Igbokwe and Reno Omokri, openly criticised him.

In response to the criticism, Davido defended his stance, suggesting that the outrage stems from the significant influence entertainers like himself wield as unofficial representatives of their countries.

Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) account, he wrote, “Y’all mad ’cause we the real ambassadors!”.

He refers to the global platform artists provide for discussions about their home nations.

However, the backlash appears to have intensified, with Davido alleging that there are now threats to cancel his highly anticipated Lagos concert.

Addressing the issue, he commented: “Dem say dem go cancel my show ’cus of my interview … loooool I don’t have to perform in Nigeria”.

This situation shows the precarious position many celebrities find themselves in when addressing sensitive national issues.
