Nigerian telecommunication companies are beginning to implement a new tariff, amidst horrible internet service users experience in some locations.
The situation calls for a good oversight by enforcement bodies to ensure Nigerians get service for their money.
Now, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) is rising to the task. It is intensifying efforts to monitor the impact of telecom tariff hikes.
The body says the intensified oversight will, ensure they lead to improved service quality.
In collaboration with the NCC, the commission aims to protect consumers from hidden charges by requiring clear, upfront pricing.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Director of Corporate Affairs at the FCCPC, Ondaje Ijagwu, confirmed that the commission would monitor the impact of the new telecommunications tariff adjustments.
The aim, he explained, is to ensure telecom companies comply with regulatory standards.
Furthermore, Ijagwu explained that the FCCPC was working with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to address consumer concerns during the transition period and beyond.
He emphasised that any tariff adjustments should result in measurable improvements in network reliability, speed, and customer service, benefiting consumers directly.

In addition, Ijagwu praised the NCC’s approach, highlighting the 50% tariff adjustment, which was significantly lower than the over 100% increase operators initially proposed.
Mandatory Disclosure Table
He said this decision balanced industry sustainability with consumer protection.
Moreover, the NCC has introduced measures to improve transparency, requiring operators to disclose clear and straightforward pricing details, including costs, validity periods, and plan inclusions.
Now, the operators will provide a mandatory disclosure table to help consumers make informed decisions without hidden fees or surprises.
Finally, Ijagwu noted that the FCCPC and NCC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that provided a framework for overseeing the tariff adjustments and ensuring they met consumer needs.
He urged consumers to report any unfair practices to the FCCPC through its official channels for quick resolution
