R.Kelly is already serving a 30-year sentence for sex trafficking from a 2021 case in New York and received an additional 20-year sentence in 2023 for child pornography in Chicago.

Kelly argued that he was wrongfully retroactively prosecuted under a federal law enacted in 2003, which eliminated the statute of limitations for sex crimes involving minors.

Federal prosecutors did not respond to his appeal.

The high court issued a lengthy order list on Monday, October 7, 2024, disposing of hundreds of cases on the same day the justices began their new term with oral arguments.
