Shattered Lives: 31 Female Inmates To Face Murder Trial In Ebonyi

In a world where second chances can make all the difference, some people find hope when they least expect it.

These 31 Female Inmates Are Facing Murder Trial In Ebonyi

Picture a 16-year-old boy, Ogobuchi Ikebe, locked behind prison bars for stealing a Bluetooth device.

He had perhaps thought it was just a momentary mistake.

But mistakes in the real world can come with heavy consequences.

Hopes For Female Inmates In Ebonyi

Fortunately for him, a ray of hope arrived in the form of Mrs. Mary-Maudline Uzoamaka Nwifuru, the Ebonyi first Lady, who paid his fine and secured his freedom, along with 40 other male inmates.

But for some, freedom is still a distant dream.

In the same Nigerian Correctional Service Custodial Centre in Abakaliki, 31 women sit in silence, their fates hanging in the balance.

Accused of capital offences, including murder, they await their trials, knowing that if convicted, their next destination will be Enugu Maximum Prison, where death-row inmates await their uncertain future.

Legal Realities And Ongoing Trials

On Tuesday, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ben Odo, revealed these details while speaking to journalists at the custodial centre.

He explained that none of the female inmates could benefit from the fines paid because their charges were too severe.

Odo stated, “We have 1,265 inmates here at the Nigerian Correctional Service Custodial Centre in Abakaliki.

“Of those, 31 are female, and all have capital offences attached to their cases, including murder”.

He added that until their cases are resolved in court, no assistance through fines can apply to them.

If found guilty, they will be transferred to Enugu Maximum Prison, where they will face the consequences of their convictions.
