The High Court of Shariah in Kano State has sentenced an Islamic Cleric, Sheikh Abduljabar Nasiru Kabara to death by hanging for committing blasphemy.

The Judge, Ibrahim Sarki Yola, convicted him on Thursday, after a two-hour court session in which he was found guilty of all the four charges leveled against him by state prosecutors.

The cleric was also accused of inciting riots in Kano State through his alleged blasphemous preaching.

The court ordered the state government to confiscate the two mosques belonging to the cleric.

It also placed a ban on all works produced by the cleric from being broadcasted by radio and television stations.

The Cleric trial happens 15 months ago after he was charged by the Kano state government in July 2021.

BBC Hausa reports that Sheikh Abduljabar reacted by saying he was not guilty as charged.

The judge said the cleric could appeal the judgment in a superior court.
