Senate Presidency: Why Tinubu May Return To Nigeria Soon

The tussle for the Senate Presidency is not one that Nigeria’s president-elect, Bola Ahmad Tinubu, will want to ignore.

Senate

Senator Tinubu must be familiar with how tough it gets in the tussle and needs to be on ground to monitor where the pendulum will swing.

Also, President Muhammadu Buhari is not someone that will want to hand over a Senate turn apart by a tussle for leadership.

He witnessed what happened in 2015 when Bukola Saraki emerged Senate President, contrary to the wish of the ruling party.

The President wants to have a meeting with the President-elect, Vice president-elect, Kashim Shettima and senators-elect on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The meeting will hold inn Aso Rock after the Sallah break.

As a result of these developments, Nigeria’s president-elect is likely to return to Nigeria.

He has been away in France to rest.

Also, on his departure few weeks after winning the February 25 election, he said he would be marking the Sallah outside Nigeria.

In relation to the move to ensure that the APC retains the Senate presidency, a senator-elect spoke with Saturday Sun on the planned meeting.

According to him, an adopted candidate for the position of the Senate President and the Deputy President of the Senate will be announced.

This will only change where there is a special intervention.

Purpose Of The Meeting

According to the lawmaker-elect, the main purpose of the meeting is to stop the repeat of Bukola Saraki’s emergence in 2015.

Furthermore, he says President Buhari is aware of the development.

However, an expanded meeting is expected to hold when Tinubu and the national chairman of APC, Abdullahi Adamu return.

“There are many options that are being considered.

“They want to see if they can micro-zone the positions and directly instruct APC senators-elect to work for the people.

“Once that’s done, any plan to oppose it may not work.

The Opposition

“The only problem with that option is that the opposition has a commanding number of 50 senators-elect.

“But what I can assure you is that, a repeat of Saraki’s emergence may likely not happen with Tinubu as President of Nigeria,” he concluded.
