When Peter Obi moved to the Labour Party, he may not be aware that something bigger was sitting ahead of him beckoning. Now, the Labour Party in the Nigerian political space has surprisingly become a force to reckon with.
Mr. Obi, the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election had cross-carpeted from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The move which happened in 2022 came only about two weeks before the PDP presidential primary election.
It had been expected that Obi would wait in the party and once again run alongside Atiku Abubakar, the PDP presidential candidate.
However, Obi had bigger dreams that he knew he might have not been able to achieve in the PDP.
LP Becomes A Force
After getting the LP ticket, Obi became the favorite of many young people, not only because he supported them during the #EndSARS protest.
But he also became a breath of fresh air away from the regular politicians of the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC) that they were used to.

Obi built a strong campaign with the youths and Nigeria witnessed large participation from the youths before, during, and after the election.
A Dream Remains A Dream
Despite having a strong campaign, Mr Obi could not win the 2023 presidential election.
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the APC won the election and Mr Obi came third place after PDP’s Atiku.
Still, the LP has not accepted defeat and is currently plying the legal route to prove that he won the election.
Now, the Labour party has also announced plans to mobilise supporters and party members for a nationwide protest against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The Protest
An appeal court granted the LP and PDP access to inspect the sensitive materials used by INEC in the February 25 presidential election.
The party has now revealed that it would protest if the electoral commission refused to comply with the court order.
The party disclosed this in a statement by its spokesperson, Dr Yunusa Tanko.
According to the party, INEC, “with greatest impunity have refused, neglected and failed to obey the Order of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal”.
“The electoral umpire has continued to ignore and or disobey the valid Order of such magnitude till now,” the party said.

The party described INEC’s failure to comply with the court order as an act of judicial insubordination.
“It should be noted that in a democracy like ours, the rule of law must triumph not only in our legal system but also in our body polity.
“The action of INEC under reference also constitutes, for all intent and purposes, an act of judicial insubordination and willful refusal to comply with the court’s order,” Dr Tanko noted.
