As traditional worshippers prepare to hold the Oro Festival across Lagos State from August 1 to 15, a new concern has emerged among Lagos residents and visitors.
The question on everyone’s lips is; “will the gods be able to function properly if there is hunger in the land?”
This question reflects the growing unease as the festival’s timeframe coincides with the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest.
Economic Hardship
The protest seeks to address issues of bad governance and the widespread economic hardship.
Meanwhile, the notice about the Oro Festival, went viral on social media on Wednesday.
Also, the notice informed the public of the upcoming traditional Yoruba cultural event involving significant rituals.
However, the suspicious overlap with the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest has led many to question the timing and priorities during a period of social unrest.
Gboyega Akosile, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, emphasised that both traditional worshippers and protesters have the right to carry out their activities.
Also, he advised both groups to respect each other’s rights to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
The gods’ Ability
Given the current climate of economic hardship and social unrest, many argue that addressing the fundamental issues affecting the people.
The fundamental issues such as hunger and bad governance should take precedence.
Also, the gods’ ability to function properly amidst widespread suffering is being questioned.
Some social media users suggests that traditional worshippers should join the protest to highlight the pressing needs of the community.

However, this isn’t the first time the Oro Festival has been embroiled in controversy
Ahead of the 2023 general elections, residents witnessed pots of rituals placed on several junctions and in front of houses across the state.
