Petrol Marketers In South-east Fear Their Business Will Die

In Enugu State, residents do not buy as much fuel as they used to since the subsidy removal, a development that has cut consumption by half. Subsidy Removal: Groups To Protest On Democracy Day

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, IPMAN, has said that hike in fuel price occasioned by the abrupt removal of subsidy is threatening the survival of their businesses.

Chinedu Anyaso is the Chairman of IPMAN in Enugu Depot Community. He says average daily sales of the product has dropped by about 50% from May 30 to date.

Mr Anyaso, whose depot serves Anambra, Ebonyi and Enugu States, said marketers were facing existential challenge as low profits.

According to him, reduced sales is affecting their ability to meet their operational cost and obligation with banks.

He said if the negative development was not urgently challenged, many operators would shut down.

It will result in the collapse of the downstream sector and loss of numerous jobs, he projects.

Also, he highlights that marketers are worse hit by this policy of subsidy removal.

He said profitability had reduced because average sales had also dropped by about 50%.

“Most marketers are finding it difficult to remain in business because increasing cost of operation, payment of workers and meeting bank obligations are becoming difficult.

“We appeal to the Federal Government to save downstream operations from collapsing by working on reduction in pump prices,” he said.
