There is a popular perception that the road to national development often runs through the youth.
As part of their growth, many young Nigerian graduates embark on a one-year mandatory service, contributing to different sectors across Nigeria.
However, a recurring issue has been the rejection of these corps members by some government agencies.
With a renewed commitment to this vital service, the Ministry for Youth Development is stepping in to ensure that no corps member is turned away.
Corps Members Rejection
In a recent press conference in Abuja, the Minister for Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, addressed the issue.
According to him, the ministry would send a memo to President Bola Tinubu.
This memo will instruct all government agencies and parastatals not to reject corps members assigned to them for their mandatory service.
However, Olawande explained that the ministry was aware of the rejections and had already taken steps to eliminate barriers for corps members.
“Let them post them first, then we would tackle the rejection,” he said.
Also, he highlighted that a memo had been sent to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), clarifying that there should be no obstacles to the posting process.

He further added that “before now, there was a barrier that corps members could not be posted to certain places. Banks come and take them.
“If you don’t have experience in banking, how do you know you’re good at accounting or whatever? We should stop lying to ourselves.
“This is also part of how you should learn whatever you studied.”
Sending Memo To President
Olawande also shared that the ministry plans to send another memo to the President, urging all government agencies and parastatals to accept corps members.
“It is a process; we can’t do everything at once,” he said. “The one in our capacity, we have thrown it out.
“We will work together, and teamwork is important.”
With these steps, the ministry is working to ensure that no corps member faces unnecessary barriers in their service.
It believes this will reinforce the importance of the youth in shaping the future of Nigeria.
