NFF Names Éric Sékou Chelle As Super Eagles Head Coach

Chelle, a 47-year-old football tactician, previously managed Mali’s national team from 2022 to 2024. During his tenure, he led the team to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), showcasing his capability to handle high-pressure tournaments.

Born in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, Chelle enjoyed a successful playing career in France, where he represented clubs such as Martigues, Valenciennes, Lens, Istres, and Chamois Niortais.

He also earned five caps for the Malian national team between 2004 and 2006.

The NFF’s decision to appoint Chelle comes as the Super Eagles face mounting challenges in their bid to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria is currently fourth in Group C of the World Cup qualifiers, with three points from four matches.

The team trails Rwanda, South Africa, and Benin, who each have seven points. Chelle’s immediate assignment will be to turn the tide in upcoming qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, scheduled for March 2025.

Known for his attacking football philosophy, Chelle often favours formations that promote high pressing and quick transitions.

This approach is expected to suit Nigeria’s talented roster, which includes players like Victor Osimhen, Alex Iwobi, and Ademola Lookman.
