MTNN is launching biodegradable SIM cards made from recycled paper, aiming to reduce e-waste and plastic pollution as part of its goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2040.

MTN Nigeria Communications Plc is taking a significant step towards reducing its environmental impact by launching new paper-based, biodegradable SIM cards.

This initiative aligns with the company’s “Project Zero” goals, which aim to cut greenhouse gas emissions and achieve net zero by 2040.

MTNN Commitment To Sustainability

Moreover, these new SIM cards use recycled paper, offering the same durability as plastic but with a considerably lower environmental footprint.

As a result, MTN anticipates a 60% reduction in the carbon footprint per SIM card and a 90% decrease in plastic waste.

With over 200 million SIM cards in circulation in Nigeria, of which MTN contributes over 80 million, the issue of electronic waste is critical.

In fact, Nigeria generated 500,000 metric tonnes of e-waste in 2022, much of which comes from discarded SIM cards that often end up in landfills and waterways.

Furthermore, Adekemi Adisa, MTN Nigeria’s General Manager of Sustainability, noted, “Traditional plastic SIM cards have a significant environmental impact, and most end up as e-waste.

Paper is a more sustainable alternative because it is recyclable and biodegradable.”

Consequently, the new biodegradable SIMs will reduce pollution and carbon emissions associated with production and disposal while avoiding the recycling challenges posed by plastic SIM cards.

Tobe Okigbo, MTN’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, stated that these cards reflect their commitment to environmental responsibility and waste reduction.

Finally, the rollout will begin in select MTN stores in Lagos and Abuja, with plans for broader availability.

In this way, MTN Nigeria joins a growing trend among telecom companies to adopt sustainable practices and reduce their carbon footprints.
