Things to Know About Blood Clots
What Are Blood Clots?
Blood clots are gel-like masses that form in our blood vessels. They are the body’s natural way of stopping bleeding when we get a cut or injury.
Types of Blood Clots
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
Forms in deep veins, often in the legs. Can lead to swelling, pain, and redness in the affected area.
Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
Occurs when a clot breaks free and travels to the lungs. Symptoms include sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, and coughing (sometimes with blood).
Risk Factors
Factors that increase the risk of blood clots include:
- Prolonged immobility (such as long flights or bed rest)
- Surgery or trauma
- Cancer
- Smoking
- Pregnancy
Signs and Symptoms
Symptoms of DVT:
Swelling, pain, tenderness, and red or discolored skin in the affected leg.
Symptoms of PE:
Sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, rapid heart rate, and coughing with blood.
Prevention
Stay active and avoid prolonged periods of sitting or standing.
Maintain a healthy weight and avoid smoking.
If you have risk factors, talk to your doctor about preventive measures.
Treatment
Blood thinners (anticoagulants) are often prescribed to prevent and treat blood clots.
In severe cases, procedures may be needed to remove or dissolve the clot.
