Recent explosions involving CNG vehicles have raised alarm, prompting Minister of State for Gas, Ekperikpe Ekpo, to address the issue during the 2025 budget defence session.
Ekpo attributed the incidents to uncertified technicians carrying out improper conversions, bypassing government-approved centres.
During the 2025 budget defence session, the Minister of State for Gas, Ekperikpe Ekpo, addressed concerns regarding recent explosions involving Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles.
He explained that the incidents occurred due to uncertified conversion processes.
Roadside technicians modified the vehicles involved, instead of using government-approved centres.
Ekpo reassured lawmakers by emphasising that the CNG initiative had undergone thorough research before its launch.
He stated: “A Presidential Committee on CNG conducted extensive tests to ensure the technology’s safety and sustainability for Nigeria.”
He further clarified that improper conversions, not the CNG technology itself, caused the explosions.
However, lawmakers sought more details.

Hon. Kafilat Ogbara asked what steps the government was taking to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Meanwhile, Senator Natasha Akpoti expressed concerns about the technology’s adaptability to Nigeria’s unique conditions.
She pointed out that Nigeria’s harsh climate and poor road infrastructure challenge the vehicles, as they were originally designed for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).
The session also brought attention to funding issues, with lawmakers criticising the ₦903 million allocated for capital projects in the 2025 budget.
In response, Minister of State for Petroleum, Senator Henikien Lokpobiri, explained that the ministry focuses on policy formulation rather than the execution of capital projects.
In conclusion, lawmakers urged the government to enforce stricter regulations on CNG conversions, conduct more research, and increase funding to ensure the initiative’s success.
