If you are a civil servant in Nigeria, congratulations are in order. This is because the Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government has disclosed that the new minimum wage will take effect from May 1, 2024.

This year’s Workers’ Day celebration is indeed worth celebrating.

However, it was said that the decision was made despite the fact that the Tripartite Committee On National Minimum Wage is yet to conclude its negotiations.

But the date has been revealed and Nigerians cannot hold back their excitement.

Now, they will have to wait patiently for the manifestation of this promise, as it is often said, “seeing is believing”.

People who share this view are not enemies of progress, neither do they doubt the Minister of State Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, who made this known on Wednesday while addressing Nigerian workers at the May Day celebration in Abuja.

All they are saying is that Nigerians should not get their hopes high.

Meanwhile, Onyejeocha said it is regrettable that the new national minimum wage is not ready before today.

However, a wide consultation is ongoing to ensure that the document is out together as soon as possible.
