A masquerade in operation is no new thing to Nigerians, as it is part of the culture for them to participate in spiritual activities in some parts of the country.
However, what is quite disturbing is when individuals hide under the guise of being masquerades to unleash terror on citizens.
Police Operatives serving in the Nsukka Sector of the Enugu State Command’s Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad have arrested a ‘’masquerade” popularly called Oriokpa.
Oriokpa was caught on tape physically assaulting a female victim at Ugwuoye Junction, Nsukka.
The man behind the masquerade costume was later identified as Ugwuoke Ebube “m,” aged 22, of Enugu Road, Nsukka.
DSP Daniel Ndukwe released a statement following this incident.
He says an investigation into the case suggests that the suspect was part of a group of masqueraders that similarly assaulted a female nurse riding a motorcycle, as captured in a viral video in April 2024.
In addition, he was arraigned in the Nsukka Magistrate Court of Enugu State, Nigeria, on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, but was granted bail by the court.
Ndukwe mentioned that the state commissioner of police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, condemned the act.
Also, he warned those intending to hide under the guise of culturally celebrating masquerades to commit such criminal acts of assault against fellow citizens to desist forthwith.
