Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James has been selected as the male flagbearer for Team USA at Friday’s Olympic Games opening ceremony.
His fellow American Olympians nominated him for this honour, and they have yet to announce the decision on the female flagbearer.
James, a two-time gold medallist, will be competing in his fourth Games in Paris.
“I’m proud to accept this role and honored to serve as a representative of the United States.”
“I’m committed to uniting the world and making a difference on the global stage.”
He added, “For a kid from Akron, this responsibility means everything to me, my family, my hometown, my teammates, fellow Olympians, and countless people across the country with big dreams.”
“James’ humility and sense of responsibility shone through in his statement.”
Lebron, a four-time NBA champion and the league’s all-time leading points scorer, has a rich Olympic history.
The basketballer won bronze in Athens in 2004 during his first Games, followed by gold medals in Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012.
The opening ceremony on Friday night will be a historic event, held on the River Seine, marking the first time a summer Olympic opening ceremony will take place outside the main stadium.
