The impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly has left the state in chaos with reactions springing up from every corner of the country.
While members of the Lagos State House of Assembly named gross misconduct and financial misappropriation as the reason behind Obasa’s impeachment, Shehu Sani, a former Senator for Kaduna Central, says there is more to it than meets the eyes.
The Deputy Speaker of the House, Mojisola Meranda, who represents Apapa State Constituency 1 of the Lagos State, took over as acting Speaker pending the selection of a new one.
Meanwhile, in a post shared on X, Sani suggested that Obasa’s alleged collaboration with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s adversaries could have been a major factor.
He listed other potential reasons for the former Speaker’s removal, including his alleged impeachment plot against the governor.
Sani outlined the following reasons as contributing factors: “FIVE factors that can lead to the impeachment of a Speaker of a State Assembly; Experiences from 1999
“When there is a strong suspicion that the Speaker is plotting impeachment.
“When the Speaker is becoming too independent and resist taking orders from the Governor.
“If the speaker is not “taking good care” of members and leaving them “hungry”.

However, heavy security was deployed around the State House of Assembly as the political drama unfolded, which coincided with rumours of Obasa’s potential gubernatorial ambitions for the 2027 elections.
