Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has declared a public holiday in observance of the 2024 Hijrah 1446.
The 1st of Muharram and the beginning of the Islamic New Year will soon be celebrated in Nigeria.
The announcement of the work-free day was made in a statement by the Information commissioner, Dotun Oyelade.
The Oyo State government has designated Monday, July 8, 2024, as a public holiday to commemorate the new Islamic calendar year, Hijrah 1446AH.
As reported by The Punch, Information Commissioner Dotun Oyelade makes the announcement on Thursday, July 4, 2024.
According to him, the state government acknowledges the significance of Hijrah in the lives of Muslims.
The commissioner highlighted that Hijrah marks the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina, a pivotal event in Islamic history.
The statement reads: “As a gesture of respect and solidarity with the Muslim community, we have declared Monday, 8th July 2024, a work-free day in the state”.
Also, the government also encouraged all residents to use this occasion to pray for peace and unity.
Furthermore, for the prosperity in Oyo State and Nigeria as a whole.

Also, the statement read: “The Hijrah is a time for reflection, prayer, and community spirit.
Let us come together on this day to pray for peace, unity, and prosperity in our state and our nation”.
