Scottish-Nigerian actress Carolyna Hutchings has opened up about the challenges she faced growing up as a mixed-race individual in Nigeria.
Also, she says racism was a significant part of her experience both at home and in school.
In a recent interview with Arise TV, Hutchings shared how her skin color and hair texture made her a target for discrimination from an early age.
Also, she recalled enduring relentless bullying throughout her primary and secondary school years, which forced her to develop resilience and learn how to stand up for herself.
“Growing up as a mixed-race child in Nigeria, raised by my grandmother, I faced a lot of racism,” she said.
“My skin colour and the texture of my hair were always an issue. I was constantly bullied from primary school through secondary school, which meant I had to learn how to defend myself at a very young age.”
Beyond her school years, Hutchings revealed that her challenges with racism extended into her professional life.
Despite being highly educated, she still encountered bias and prejudice in the workplace.
“I am a scholar; I have multiple degrees and certifications. But as a beautiful, mixed-race woman, when you speak with intelligence and confidence, society tends to bash you,” she explained.
In addition to racial discrimination, Hutchings also spoke about the stigma she had faced as a divorced woman in Nigerian society.
