Looting during protests can be a significant concern, as observed in various locations including Kano. One building that was looted during the protest belongs to the judiciary.
On Sunday, the Kano State Judiciary announced that it has launched an investigation into the property vandalised and looted during the national hunger protest in Kano on August 1.

During this protest, which was intended to address serious concerns about hunger and economic hardship, hoodlums took advantage of the situation to target the High Court’s premises.
This act of vandalism not only disrupted judicial operations but also highlighted the need for increased security and better management of protests to prevent such incidents in the future.
Kano State High Court spokesperson, Baba Ibrahim, confirmed the investigation and promised that “the report will be made public soon”.
On August 1, rioters, claiming to be #EndBadGovernmentInNigeria protesters, “broke into the High Court, stealing money and guns.”
The stolen items included those seized from kidnappers and kept as evidence in ongoing cases. Private and official vehicles were also destroyed.
Vehicles parked at the court “were set ablaze or vandalised”. Offices, including those of the chief judge, suffered extensive damage.

Some of the burned vehicles were evidence in ongoing cases. This is “the first such incident for the Kano State Judiciary”.
