Gospel singer Sinach has been handed a ₦5 billion lawsuit from music producer Michael Oluwole, popularly known as Maye.
Oluwole is dragging Sinach to court over allegations of copyright infringement on her 2016 global hit song, Way Maker.
In the lawsuit, filed under case number FHC/L/CS/402/2024 at the Federal High Court in Lagos, Maye claims to be the co-author and co-owner of the song.
Also, he is seeking a court declaration recognising his contributions to the track.
He is demanding general damages of N5 billion for what he describes as a cumulative infringement of his intellectual property rights.
Sinach, whose real name is Osinachi Kalu Okoro Egbu, has denied these claims, asserting that she is the sole creator of Way Maker.
She highlighted her established global reputation in the gospel music industry even before the release of the song.
Also, Sinach also pointed out that Way Maker has achieved monumental success worldwide.
Furthermore, this earns her numerous accolades and recognition across international platforms.
The trial commenced on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.
However, it was adjourned to January 29 and 30, 2025 to allow both parties to present further evidence and arguments.
