Germany striker Thomas Mueller has announced his retirement from the national team after a 14-year career, culminating in 131 games and 45 goals.
In a video statement, Mueller reflected on his journey, saying, “When I played my first international match over 14 years ago, I never dreamed of all this.”
“Great victories and bitter defeats. I’m proud to have played for my country, celebrating and shedding tears together.”
Mueller’s last game for the national team was Germany’s 2-1 loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 quarterfinals, where a late extra-time goal dashed their hopes of winning on home soil.
A tearful Mueller had hinted at retirement after the game.
Germany national team director Rudi Voeller praised Mueller, saying, “Nobody is like Thomas Mueller… His value to German football cannot be overestimated.”
Mueller won the Golden Boot at the 2010 World Cup and scored the opening goal in Germany’s famous 7-1 victory over Brazil in the 2014 World Cup.
He will continue playing for Bundesliga club Bayern Munich, where he is under contract until 2025.
