England contended with the group stages of the Euros without a natural left-back, however, Gareth Southgate may get some positive Luke Shaw news.

England came into the Euros as one of the favourites but have failed to showcase their level through the group stage in Germany, as they struggled to a win over Serbia and drew against Denmark and Slovenia.

Part of their struggles can be explained by the lack of tactical adaptability that comes with a right-footed left-back with Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker having had to deputise in the position for Southgate.

However, Shaw’s potential return could see that burden lifted off England’s shoulders.

Speaking in the mixed-media zone, Shaw was asked about when he would return to action.

He had a simple answer: “Next game”.

Southgate had admitted earlier that it was a ‘gamble’ to have taken Shaw in his 26-man squad for the Euros with his issues with fitness throughout the season with Manchester United and not having elected to bring another natural left-back to Germany.

However, Shaw’s potential return could help Southgate reinvigorate the squad, as they look to win their first major trophy since 1966.

The Three Lions will be in action next when they take on Slovakia in their round of 16 clash at Veltins-Arena as Southgate will hope that he will be able to call upon Shaw to start or at least feature as a substitute.
