Emefiele Faces ₦1.2bn Procurement Fraud Charge

The suspended governor of the Central Bank, Godwin Emefiele, is entering a new phase in his trying times. He now faces a ₦1.2 billion procurement fraud charge.

Emefiele who only recently regained his freedom after spending 151 days in custody, now has a new set of charges to answer to in court.

The ex-governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele was in court to respond to allegations of ₦1.2 billion procurement fraud.

These amended 20-count allegations were filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Emefiele appeared at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Maitama, Abuja on Friday, and pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The EFCC, on Thursday, filed an amended 20-count charge against Emefiele before the High Court.

Emefiele Used His Position To Confer Corrupt Advantages

Also, Emefiele was said to have awarded contracts to his wife Omoile Margret and brother Omoile Macombo in 2022.

The contractors were to carry out external renovations on the CBN Governor’s Residence at No. 2 Glover Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.

According to the EFCC, the embattled CBN governor used his position to confer corrupt advantages in awarding contracts.

The former six-count charges were expanded to include criminal breach of trust, forgery, and conspiracy to commit forgery.

Also, he will be answering to charges on procurement fraud, and conspiracy to commit a felony.

The trial was adjourned to the February 12 and 13.
