Nigeria’s D’Tigress have risen to eighth place in the latest Federation of International Basketball Association (FIBA) rankings, released on Thursday, August 29, 2024.
This marks a four-place jump for the team following their historic performance at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Under coach Rena Wakama, D’Tigress made history as the first African team, male or female, to be ranked in the top 10.
Their Olympic campaign saw them achieve notable victories over top-ranked Australia and Canada.
Nigeria also became the first African team to reach the quarter-finals at the Olympics, though they were eventually eliminated by the gold medalists, the United States.
The current FIBA rankings see the USA retaining the top spot, followed by Australia in second. France, China, and Spain round out the top five.
In Africa, Mali, Senegal, Mozambique, and Cameroon complete the top five teams.
